KP Index chart

The global geomagnetic index Kp is widely used in ionospheric and magnetospheric studies and is generally recognized as indice mesuring worldwide geomagnetic activity. Kp is one of the most common indices used to indicate the severity of the global magnetic disturbances in near-Earth space. The Kp unit is an abbreviation for planetary K-index and the label K comes from the German word Kennziffer meaning characteristic digit. K-index quantifies disturbances in the horizontal component of earth's magnetic field with an integer in the range 0-9 with 1 being calm and 5 or more indicating a geomagnetic storm. The Kp data are provided by USAF AFWA. This chart is updated every 10 minutes and bad data are automaticaly rejected.
